Dom Kennedy Sits Down With The Source

Yes, back to back Dom posts. Why? Cause I lurve this man’s music. I’m guessing this was taped while he was in NYC for his listening party. Up top he talks to The Source about his projects that he’s dropped the most recent being The Original Dom Kennedy (CDC happens to be my favorite off that mixtape) and his upcoming release of From The Westside With Love Pt. 2 which drops in May!

Organizing Chaos with Christian Clancy Part 1

Grandpa Wolf at his finest. Great interview by Al. Here’s what he had to say, “Odd Future is a mystery wrapped in an enigma. They’re buzzing more than a building lobby, with a girlfriend inside of it trying to find her cheating boyfriend (you know what I’m talking about). As an indie act they have done everything from cover Billboard Mag to sell out shows overseas. Some people believe Odd Future is a creation of a major record label, that is quietly pulling strings to make their artists superstars. Some people believe that there is a huge line of publicists, calling in every favor imaginable to give OFWGKTA their major label promo run-like looks. As we enter the offices of XL Records, we don’t see any publicists. We don’t see any big time suits, tapping away on their Blackberry’s. That doesn’t exist. Allow us to show Odd Future’s man behind the curtain, Christian Clancy.

Clancy is a laid-back, almost quiet former record executive. Before his days of running around with OF, he ran the marketing department at Interscope. The first project he ever worked on was The Marshall Mathers LP. How fitting that an artist so controversial, and so groundbreaking, was the first act he worked with. Even with his past, he assures us that the group is not yet signed to a major. He jokes that all he is looking for is the label’s PIN number. My guess is that labels aren’t all the way ready to spend millions on the group. I mean, most probably have made large offers, but very hesitantly. My consensus from major label employees is Odd Future is a risk. The group has yet to make anything close to a radio hit. They aren’t afraid to call you a faggot, or say they want to commit some act of violence against you, which leads to the fear that they can offend the wrong person. Most importantly, some labels will openly admit that they DON’T KNOW how to handle a group like this.

Christian Clancy is the head scientist, looking over the petri dish that is Odd Future. He’s is watching everything grow at a rapid rate, trying to hold all of the moving parts together. He is in charge of every members career, trying to create an opening for each and everyone. A DJing career, a television show, a writer/singer, two indie releases, and a never ending spot-date tour are on his plate. With all that he remains cool, calm, and collected. His job isn’t to interfere. He’s not there to force them to do anything, or as labels would say “develop” the group. He is there to oversee and organize. With his organization, Odd Future has become a machine without the major label “machine”.

Tyler, The Creator Interviewed by The Drone

Listen, I’ll be honest at first I judged Tyler like to the eighteenth degree. I just didn’t get him. I didn’t get Odd Future. As these months and their names start to grow you get the idea that behind these young skateboarding, opinionated wild ass kids lie some geniuses. I know you’re probably taking what I’m saying with skeptical minds but press play and really listen to this interview. You’ll see that Tyler wise beyond his age and..might even start to like the young superstar.

Karmaloop x Curren$y

I love listening to Spitta. He sounds like a high 3 year old. Up top Curren$y talks to Karmaloop about his upcoming project with Alan the Chemist as well as his other future projects. Regardless of how ridiculous Curren$y sounds sometimes, this man is bout his money and I can definitely respect that.

Big K.R.I.T. Breaks Down ‘ReturnOf4Eva’ With Devi Dev

Big K.R.I.T. tells Devi Dev that it took him a year to decide what tracks he would put on Return of 4eva and..honestly it was well worth the wait. Every joint on that mixtape sounds like perfection. This guy is my 2010, 2011 and beyond pick for winner at life.

When I sat down with Big K.R.I.T over the weekend I didn’t want to just talk about his incredible new project #ReturnOf4Eva, I wanted to break down certain song’s whose titles really stuck out to me.

In this video K.R.I.T explains in depth the thought process behind: Kings Blues, Free My Soul & Another Naive Individual Glorifying Greed and Encouraging Racism. We also talked about the use of the “N Word” and the impact of it on him (growing up in Mississippi) plus the pressure that comes with being an XXL Freshman. -Devi Dev

Dom Kennedy Interview With MeetThaDealer

Earlier this week Dom Kennedy aka one of my favorites held a listening party at Prohibit NYC on the Lower East Side which was hosted by Rap Radar. The turn out was AMAZING and due to overcrowding the NYPD had to shut the festivities down. It’s awesome though because I really didn’t realize New York fucked with Dom as much as they do and that makes my heart smile. Up top Dom talks about his upcoming project From The Westside With Love Pt 2 as well as the project he just dropped The Original Dom Kennedy which definitely has a strong West Coast feel to it. Enjoy and support Dom’s music!

Lu Parker Interview w/ Kendrick Lamar

Watching Kendrick Lamar interviews are pretty special. It’s been a while since I’ve seen anyone do interviews where you can see how much they love what they do. It’s apparent in his face, when he smiles, when he speaks and obviously when he raps. He’s such a rare talent who through the help of his craft is getting positive messages to his community as well as the world. Lu Parker does a great job with this interview in giving everyone an inside look as to who Kendrick Lamar really is.
