Courtesy of our good friend Alissa over at DotBox we were presented with this really dope contest which ties in really well with our little blog here because it definitely has an artistic flow while reaching out to the Urban Community.
MetroPCS has teamed up with an all-star cast of artists, fashion designers and musicians to launch the Android for All campaign. In conjunction with this campaign, MetroPCS is launching a contest in which aspiring artists and Android fans create their custom Google Android character for a chance to have their design produced as a one-of-a-kind vinyl toy.
Basically contestants can enter at www.androidforall.com, create their own design and then solicit votes using the Facebook ‘Like’ function. The ten contestants who collect the most ‘likes’ will be judged by a panel, and the winner will receive a 50-inch version of their design, five 3-inch vinyl toys with their design and an LG Optimus M Android phone from MetroPCS. The nine runners-up will each win an LG Optimus M Android phone.
In conjunction with the program, DJ Skee has created the official Android for All mix tape available for a free download at www.skee.tv on 1/18, featuring a number of artists involved in the campaign. Mini video documentaries featuring each artist have also been created and hosted by Levi Maestro, and can be viewed at www.androidforall.com.
MetroPCS also partnered with other artists, musicians, athletes and more; including DJ’s (DJ Khaled and DJ Skee), recording artists (Far East Movement and Rob Roy), lifestyle brands (Famous Stars and Straps, Fly Society, TapouT, and Young and Reckless), online influencers (Levi Maestro and Fatlace), photographer and producer Estevan Oriol, and pro-football legend and TV presenter Warren Sapp, to create limited-edition artwork for the campaign. Their work, with motifs ranging from detailed graphics and brand logos to printed photographs, will be showcased on the Google Android character and used on promotional materials as well as street team vehicles in Florida and Los Angeles.
MetroPCS will host in-store events from now until March 2011 in Los Angeles, Miami, Jacksonville, Tampa, and Orlando. Festivities include, but are not limited to, appearances by featured artists, well-known DJs, celebrities, and on-site ice-cream trucks featuring the celebrities’ designs. We will definitely keep you posted as the events start to come up!

My latest obsession: Emily Warren & The Betters. My best friend randomly met her at a bar a couple of weeks ago and brought her music to my attention and..I fell in love just by watching her on youtube. Her voice and band are amazing live I couldn’t wait to hear how she sounded when recorded and..if you can imagine love times ten that’s what I felt. They’re an unsigned group whose sound is geared towards the Electro / Pop / Reggae genre and hail from New York City! Her voice reminds me of a Sara Bareilles/less insane Lily Allen with a splice of Adele. Emily and her band will be performing at The Gramercy Theater on January 29th at 8pm and you can head over to their myspace for some more information! I definitely suggest checking her out, they’re fun, quirky, super talented and come highly recommended by me. I’ve posted two of my favorite songs but head over to their bandcamp page to download the entire project.

By now I’m sure everyone has seen this already but on the off chance that you haven’t .. press play and prepare for your heart to smile. I came across this video a couple of days ago and it brings a smile to my face everytime I watch it.
It’s something I think everyone should watch because at some point I know I’ve been guilty of this and even if you don’t drive I’m sure you have friends who text and drive.
Here’s the story on how I came across Eliza’s music. Being the creeper that I sometimes am I was constantly seeing Xaphoon Jones (Noah from Chiddy Bang) tweet Ms. Doolittle so I took a trip over to her twitter to discover that she was a singer! I youtubed her videos and instantly fell in love. Eliza Doolittle (yes, the name is also from George Bernard Shaw’s My Fair Lady) is an artist whose music is completely fun, infectious, pop, happy, sweet, catchy, relatable I could go on forever. She’s from the UK and coincidently the granddaughter of Theater owner Sylvia Young. Her voice is reminiscent of a poppier Adele. I think that while yes this blog is generally geared towards Hip Hop, my musical interests are definitely not confined to that and hopefully while sharing this with you, you’ll fall in love with her (musically) like I have. I’ve posted 3 of my favorite songs of Eliza’s in hopes that you’ll listen and welcome this lovely lady into your musical library.

I think the lack of donating anything in general where it be platelets, bone marrow, blood needs to be adressed more often. “On October 14th, Dipset President, Ezekiel Jiles aka Freekey Zekey will be registering bone marrow donors at Minisink Townhouse for the NYC Mission (646 Lenox Avenue) btwn 2pm-6pm. Zeke is raising awareness for bone marrow donors in the community. ” And just to add if anyone is interested in donating platelets or blood, I work at a hospital and can definitely point you in the right direction!
Once again the time has come to bring you guys the Class Disruption mixtape for September. I admit, I’m a little late since we’re already 10 days into October but hey, life’s been a little busy. To refresh your memory on why we put this together: this mixtape is a compilation of buzzworthy artists that we think you should definitely keep your eyes and ears on in the months to come. Not only is each artist creating a unique sound, we believe each particular person featured in this project in some way have the power to change the game in a revolutionary way. Why Class Disruption? Because theres always new talent being introduced on the internet, the radio, the street every 2 seconds …what ever the preconceived notion of who the new talent of this year is, it’s always disrupted by someone else who tops them. A prime example being the phenom that is Aubrey Drake Graham and massively in our opinion blowing the XXL Freshman of 2010 out of the water..disrupting the class if you may. Whoever you think may be hot right now, we believe these artists are better. Whether you listen to what we have to say or not my Miss Cleo powers are always on point and those featured on Class Disruption will most definitely have their time to shine. BT-Dubs Class Disruption – September 2010
Okay, here’s the part of my week where I try to REALLY put you guys on to good music. Sugar Tongue Slim also known as STS or just plain GOLD! has been around the scene for quite some time now. Currently there’s been two mixtapes that I’ve been listening to for the past 2 weeks, Demand More 2 being one of them. I first heard about him at a OnSmash show back a couple of months ago but being very particular when it comes to music I didn’t initially take a listen. Eventually I came across The Sole Music EP which was presented by Honey Mag.com and my interest was really peaked. You see as a girl and a lover of hip hop, The Sole Music EP was made for people like me. A dedication to chicks & kicks from songs like Take Me to Hadley Street (a little dedication to Solange) and Brown Babies this project just made me go awww. It gave us the opportunity to hear STS expose the world to how poetic he really is. Upon hearing this EP I downloaded Demand More 2 which solidified me as a fan for life. From the Black Thought Intro (Gold is a part of the Money Making Jam Boys which includes Black Thought) to What She Say this mixtape presented by TapeMasters Inc solidifies STS as a very talented MC. I like to call STS a trill lyricist. It’s almost like he makes me want to jump on a couch and swag surf but then stop midway and go, “what a minute did y’all just hear what he said?” all while screaming GOLD!! I know how hardheaded people are when it comes to opening up to music so I’ve decided to post some of my favorite songs, hopefully it’ll peak your interest and if only you leave this entry with the name GOLD! in your head, my job here is done.

Using Bangladesh’ infamous beat this is why I started calling STS a trill lyricist. Managing to make me want to jump on a couch while trying to listen to his actual words is what Gold did with this track. See Gucci made this track Trill, Big Sean made it lyrical but Slim did both. Gold was the first I think to go over this beat essentially paving the way for other MCs to take a stab at it. Literally though, he goes in on this track – displaying his story telling skills while once again proving to everyone that he’s a force to be reckoned with, I mean seriously though how many rappers do you know that’s successfully gone over La Roux’s In For The Kill and made it their own? I’ll wait..

Honestly, I like this because I want a boy to make a song like this for me. I’m a girl I can’t help it. Also R.L. and Cassidy make such great additions to this song, it’s my favorite off Demand More 2, I’ve probably played it like 435 times since last week.

Okay, yes this is a Jason Derulo beat but you really forget that it’s a Derulo song once Gold starts spitting. Kind of a dedication to his momma while telling us about his life this is my 2nd favorite song off this project. I think more artists need to get to a point where they’re comfortable enough with being vulnerable and relating to things all of us go through like..how much we love our moms. Love the ending of this track too..the funniest thing at the end of the conversation, she just looked me in the eye and she said GOLD!!

Before I say anything, if you don’t know who Don Will is or haven’t heard of Tanya Morgan leave this blog right now. We don’t want your kind. Don Will, Ming and STS together make this track just beautiful. It just solidifies my thoughts that girls don’t need to wear 5 inch heels to be sexy. For those chicks out there who manage to make a pair of Chuck Taylors look good, here’s your anthem.
